Case Studies
BSL Media & Learning, part of Springer Nature, develops e-learning for healthcare and vocational education. The organisations that take these materials often already run their own LMS, such as Blackboard, Canvas, Pynter or CAPP. The challenge: make BSL's content available from those different LMS platforms, with the right licences and product codes, and with results passed back.
To do that we built an LTI 1.3 tool provider on Moodle™ 4.5. With our custom plugin, external learning platforms can pull BSL e-learning straight into their own environment.
Choosing materials from the organisation's own LMS
At the centre is a Deep Linking catalog. From their own LMS a teacher first picks a learning-materials list, then selects the modules and activities they need. Those items are placed in the LMS as learning activities through LTI Deep Linking.
Not every LMS supports Deep Linking in the same way. That is why we also support platforms where a teacher copies a unique launch URL and adds it as an external activity. The integration does not depend on a hardcoded tool ID or on one specific LMS.
Licences and content per organisation
Which content is available is decided per licence holder. Different organisations can each get their own catalogue from the same central environment.
The solution supports different commercial models, including organisation-pays and student-pays. Product codes and licence rights then determine which materials are actually accessible.
The catalog was later extended with category labels from the webshop, search, and a clear message when a learning-materials list has no content yet. MijnBSL, BSL's digital books and journals platform, is integrated as well, including the option to send users straight to a specific title or page.
Results back to the LMS
The integration does not stop at launching a course. Through LTI Assignment and Grade Services (AGS), results from BSL are sent back to the customer's LMS.
Results are tied to the correct LTI resource link and lineitem. New attempts are handled with care: existing progress is never silently lost and behaviour stays predictable across LMS platforms.
The result is one central Moodle™ environment through which BSL can publish its e-learning to different external platforms in a controlled way, while licences, content selection, launches and results stay connected through LTI 1.3.
