Delayed answer display is a Moodle™ question bank plugin that hides the answer options of multiple-choice questions for a short, configurable delay. Students first see only the question, which encourages them to actively recall the answer instead of recognising it from the list. The idea is based on research by Utrecht University: a moment to formulate your own answer reduces guessing and improves retention.
The idea was pitched at MoodleMoot 2026 by Chantal Mülders of de Betonvereniging. Together with Avetica we turned it into a serious plugin: Ldesign Media developed it, the costs were shared, and the result is a free community plugin for the whole Moodle™ community, published on the Moodle™ Marketplace with the Premium Certified Partner label.
Administrators set a site-wide default delay; teachers can override it per quiz with a tri-state setting (follow site default, enable or disable) and their own delay of 1 to 60 seconds. During the delay an optional waiting message can be shown, editable via the Moodle™ language customisation.
The reveal is pure CSS: no JavaScript runs on the student side, and hidden options are removed from the keyboard tab order and assistive technology trees during the delay. The plugin stores no personal data and automatically cleans up per-quiz settings when a quiz is deleted.
