Alternative to Easygenerator?
Looking at Easygenerator? There is a lot to be said for it: Easygenerator is a cloud-based e-learning authoring tool by Rotterdam-based Easygenerator B.V., focused on 'employee-generated learning' — subject-matter experts without an e-learning background create courses themselves, with built-in AI help (EasyAI), and publish them as SCORM/xAPI to an LMS or via a shareable link. It is emphatically an authoring tool with light 'LMS-lite' functionality (hosting, basic tracking), not a full LMS; as of 2025-2026 the company claims 50,000+ authors at 2,000+ companies. On Capterra it scores 4.8/5 (108 reviews), with ease of use consistently the biggest plus.
Still, no single platform fits everyone. Below we compare Easygenerator honestly with Moodle plus custom development — including the aspects where Easygenerator wins.
When is Easygenerator the right choice?
Be honest with yourself and choose Easygenerator if your core need is content creation, not platform management: an L&D team or 5-15 subject-matter experts that wants to create courses quickly without e-learning specialists, already has an LMS (or is fine with light hosting/tracking and shareable links), wants unlimited learners without per-user costs, has no deep customization or on-premise data requirements, and would rather start today with a SaaS subscription than run an implementation project. For that profile, Easygenerator is faster and cheaper than a custom Moodle project.
Where Easygenerator is strong
- Very accessible authoring process: subject-matter experts without e-learning experience create courses themselves; reviewers on Capterra (4.8/5, 108 reviews) and G2 consistently name ease of use as the biggest plus
- Full SCORM 1.2/SCORM 2004 and xAPI (1.0.2) export to any LMS, including 'dynamic SCORM' with which changes come through automatically in the LMS without re-uploading
- Unlimited number of learners on Team and Enterprise plans; price scales with authors, not with headcount
- Customer support is widely praised in G2/Capterra reviews as fast and helpful
- Dutch company (Rotterdam), ISO 27001 certified (since Nov 2022), GDPR-compliant, hosting on AWS EU Central (Frankfurt)
- Built-in AI authoring (EasyAI: course builder, editor, image generation) and 42+ learner languages, with a 75-language translation add-on
Points to consider with Easygenerator
- Authoring tool with 'LMS-lite' delivery, not a full LMS: no full enrolment, cohort or competency structure; reviewers report that learners have to be added per course separately and that an email change can void progress
- Reporting is limited: reviewers call the audit trail 'basic' and data export mainly CSV; in-depth learning analysis requires an external LMS/LRS
- Template-based authoring with limited design freedom: reviewers mention limited quiz forms, standardised layouts and the absence of branching scenarios
- Closed SaaS: no self-hosting and no code-level customization; the editable source version of courses exists only within the platform
- SSO, LMS integrations and full branding sit in the Enterprise plan (price on request); the annual per-author licence continues as long as you want to be able to edit
How Easygenerator's pricing works
Easygenerator is a subscription per author (not per learner), billed annually. Published prices (indicative, vendor pricing page 2025-2026): Pro approx. EUR 108/month (EUR 1,299/year) for 1 author, max 10 courses and 100 learners; Team approx. EUR 541/month (EUR 6,495/year) from 5 authors with unlimited courses/learners, co-authoring and learner analytics; Enterprise on request (SSO, LMS integrations, custom branding, dedicated success manager). Add-ons such as EasyTranslate, EasyVideo and EasyCoach cost extra. 14-day free trial. All amounts indicative; current prices at easygenerator.com.

| Aspect | Easygenerator | Moodle + custom work |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing model | Subscription per author, annually: Pro approx. EUR 1,299/yr (1 author, 100 learners), Team approx. EUR 6,495/yr (5+ authors, unlimited learners), Enterprise on request — indicative | No licence costs (GPL); one-off implementation/custom budget (indicative EUR 5k-100k) plus hosting/administration |
| Hosting & data location | SaaS only, AWS EU Central (Frankfurt); no self-hosting possible | Self-hosted or managed in a self-chosen NL/EU datacenter; full ownership of data and database Strongest option for this aspect |
| Customization & adaptability | Templates and branding (full branding only with Enterprise); closed SaaS, no code-level changes | Open source: own plugins, themes and workflows at code level, endlessly adaptable Strongest option for this aspect |
| Content authoring | Core strength: rapid authoring for subject-matter experts, AI help (EasyAI), co-authoring and review workflows; highly rated on ease of use (Capterra 4.8/5) Strongest option for this aspect | Core editor plus H5P/SCORM import; powerful but a steeper learning curve for non-specialists |
| SCORM/xAPI | Exports SCORM 1.2/2004 and xAPI 1.0.2 to any LMS, incl. dynamic SCORM (auto-update) | Plays SCORM and H5P, xAPI via an LRS plugin; is a playback platform, not a SCORM export tool |
| Learner management (LMS features) | 'LMS-lite': hosting, links and basic tracking; reviewers report limitations managing learners across multiple courses | A full LMS: enrolment methods, cohorts, groups, gradebook, competencies, certificates, learning paths Strongest option for this aspect |
| Reporting | Question analytics and learner analytics (Team+); reviewers call the audit trail basic and export mostly CSV | Extensive logs, gradebook, custom reports and BI connections; extendable to fit your needs Strongest option for this aspect |
| Integrations | Dynamic SCORM to any LMS; native integrations and SSO/LMS connections reserved for Enterprise | Open web services API, LTI, OAuth2/SAML SSO and thousands of plugins; custom connections (HR, AFAS, CRM) possible Strongest option for this aspect |
| Vendor lock-in & exit | Published SCORM/xAPI packages can be exported, but the editable source stays in the platform; dynamic SCORM links require an active subscription | Full ownership of code, content and data; switching hosting party or agency without losing the platform Strongest option for this aspect |
| Implementation effort | Start the same day: 14-day trial, browser-based, no installation; first course within hours Strongest option for this aspect | Implementation project of weeks to months (setup, custom work, migration, administration) |
| Support model | In-app chat support, widely praised in reviews; dedicated success manager with Enterprise | Depends on your Moodle partner: SLA, tailored further development and administration; community forums as a safety net |
| Compliance (incl. healthcare) | ISO 27001 (since Nov 2022), GDPR with DPO, data in AWS EU Central; data location not selectable | GDPR tooling in Moodle core (privacy API, data requests); data location, processor chain and audit fully configurable yourself |
| Scalability | Unlimited learners from the Team plan; SaaS scales without own administration, costs scale with the number of authors | Scales to very large deployments provided the infrastructure scales along; capacity and costs in your own hands |
Why organisations still choose Moodle with custom development
No licence or per-author costs: Moodle is GPL open source; the budget goes to hosting and custom work you permanently own instead of an ongoing subscription
Full data sovereignty: a self-chosen Dutch/EU datacenter, own database and full control — relevant for healthcare, government and organisations with strict data-processor requirements
Unlimited code-level customization: own plugins, themes, workflows and integrations fitting internal processes exactly — impossible in a closed SaaS
A full LMS: enrolment, cohorts, gradebook, competencies, certificates, learning paths and extensive reporting instead of 'LMS-lite' tracking
Open integration landscape: web services API, LTI and thousands of community plugins for connections with HR, CRM and identity systems (e.g. AFAS, Azure AD/SSO without an Enterprise tier)
No vendor lock-in: content, user data and platform remain yours, even if you switch supplier
Honest caveats about Moodle with custom development
- Authoring in Moodle (core editor + H5P) is less polished for non-specialists than Easygenerator's rapid authoring; subject-matter experts need more instruction
- Moodle with custom development is an implementation project (weeks to months, indicatively EUR 5k-100k) plus ongoing administration/hosting, versus starting the same day with a SaaS trial
- You are responsible for (or outsource): updates, security patches and server administration — with Easygenerator that is part of the subscription
Switching from Easygenerator to Moodle
Migration from Easygenerator to Moodle runs via the standard export formats: every course can be downloaded as a SCORM 1.2, SCORM 2004 or xAPI (1.0.2) package and you import that zip into Moodle as a SCORM activity (xAPI tracking requires an LRS plugin).
Important: such a package is a published, non-editable version — the editable source stays in Easygenerator, so content you want to keep editing has to be rebuilt in Moodle (e.g. with H5P). Export 'manual' SCORM packages before cancelling, because dynamic SCORM links point to Easygenerator hosting and no longer work without an active subscription.
Learner results are mainly exportable as CSV (for archiving, not automatically importable into the Moodle gradebook) and you re-create user accounts in Moodle via CSV upload or an SSO/HR connection. All in all a light migration in terms of content playback, but plan on rebuilding for editable content.
