Alternative to TalentLMS?
Considering TalentLMS? Not a bad shout: TalentLMS is a cloud LMS (SaaS) by Epignosis, aimed at SMBs and teams that want to start online training quickly and without an IT department. The platform runs entirely at the vendor (AWS infrastructure), offers a built-in course builder with AI authoring (TalentCraft), a free entry plan and is used by 70,000+ teams according to the vendor. In 2025-2026 it scores 4.7/5 on Capterra (± 600 reviews), mainly on ease of use and fast implementation.
Still, no single platform fits everyone. Below we compare TalentLMS honestly with Moodle plus custom development — including the aspects where TalentLMS wins.
When is TalentLMS the right choice?
Are you an SMB organisation or team (roughly 20-500 active learners) without in-house IT capacity that wants to start this week with standard onboarding, product or compliance training, needs no custom processes or code-level integrations, has no hard requirement that data stays in the Netherlands/EU only, and prefers a predictable monthly fee over running an implementation project? For that buyer, TalentLMS is honestly the faster and cheaper choice than a EUR 5k+ custom Moodle project.
Where TalentLMS is strong
- Very fast implementation: sign up and build courses the same day, without own hosting or IT knowledge (Capterra reviewers praise the 'easy setup')
- Intuitive built-in course builder plus AI authoring (TalentCraft) — reviewers on Capterra and G2 call the course builder beginner-friendly
- Transparent, published prices with a free entry plan (up to 5 users/10 courses) and low entry costs
- Supports SCORM 1.2, xAPI and cmi5 for imported content
- Native integrations (incl. Salesforce, BambooHR, Zendesk) plus 1000+ apps via Zapier and a REST API
- 30+ interface languages including Dutch; white-label branding (own logo, colours, domain, custom CSS/JS) available — full removal of TalentLMS branding from the Pro plan up
Points to consider with TalentLMS
- Price per active user: costs scale with the number of users, and above the plan limits (100/500/1000) a higher plan or Enterprise contract is needed
- Closed SaaS: no source-code access, no own plugins or changes to core functionality — customization is limited to branding, custom CSS/JS and the API
- No self-hosted option; data sits on infrastructure of the American entity Epignosis LLC (AWS), with the EU-US Data Privacy Framework as transfer mechanism instead of guaranteed EU/NL storage
- SCORM 2004 is not on the list of supported e-learning protocols (SCORM 1.2, xAPI and cmi5 are)
- Reviewers on G2/Capterra report limitations in advanced features: custom reports, automation rules and editor/formatting options are experienced as limited for more complex use cases
How TalentLMS's pricing works
TalentLMS is a subscription per active user per month (SaaS). Published prices on talentlms.com/prices (indicative, USD, July 2026): Free up to 5 users/10 courses; Core USD 119/month (up to 100 active users); Grow USD 229/month (up to 500); Pro from USD 449/month + USD 6 per extra user; Enterprise on request (1000+). Around 20% discount with annual payment. Billing based on monthly active users; a 'Flex' add-on for unlimited registered users and TalentLibrary (ready-made content) as a paid add-on. Note: prices change regularly — older sources show lower rates (USD 69/109/179); always go by the current vendor page.

| Aspect | TalentLMS | Moodle + custom work |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing model | Subscription per active user: Free (5 users) to Core USD 119/month, Grow USD 229/month, Pro USD 449+/month, Enterprise on request (indicative, USD) | No licence costs (open source); one-off implementation/custom work (EUR 5k-100k) plus fixed hosting and maintenance costs, independent of user count |
| Hosting & data location | SaaS only on AWS infrastructure of Epignosis LLC (US entity); EU transfer via the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, EU Cloud CoC verified | Your choice: Dutch/EU datacenter, own server or private cloud; data demonstrably stays under your own control Strongest option for this aspect |
| Customization & adaptability | Branding, custom CSS/JS, homepage and API; no plugins or changes to core functionality possible | Full source-code access: own plugins, workflows, themes and tailored functionality; thousands of existing open-source plugins Strongest option for this aspect |
| Integrations | Native connections (Salesforce, BambooHR, Zendesk etc.), 1000+ apps via Zapier, REST API — limited to what the vendor offers | LDAP/SAML/OAuth2, LTI, web services API and any conceivable connection via custom work — but it does have to be built |
| Content creation (authoring) | Intuitive built-in builder plus TalentCraft AI authoring; praised by reviewers as beginner-friendly Strongest option for this aspect | Ample activity types (quiz, assignment, H5P) but no AI builder as standard; steeper learning curve for authors |
| SCORM / xAPI support | SCORM 1.2, xAPI and cmi5; SCORM 2004 not on the list of supported protocols | SCORM 1.2 and 2004 standard, LTI standard; xAPI/cmi5 via plugins |
| Reporting | Built-in and custom reports with Excel/CSV export; reviewers report limitations with more complex custom reports | Standard reports plus fully custom dashboards and direct database access for any desired report |
| Vendor lock-in & exit | Data export (users/courses/reports) via Excel/CSV; content built in the own editor has no documented SCORM export — rebuild on departure | Open source and open database: full course backups (MBZ), content and data are and remain yours; switching partner without losing the platform Strongest option for this aspect |
| Implementation effort | Live the same day: create an account, set the house style, upload content; no IT needed Strongest option for this aspect | A project of weeks: setup, hosting, theme and integrations; requires an implementation partner or in-house administration |
| Support model | Vendor support included (email; live chat/phone and account manager from Grow) — rated positively in reviews | Support via your Moodle partner with a tailored SLA; quality and speed depend on the partner, not on a central vendor |
| Compliance & privacy (healthcare/government) | GDPR pages, EU Cloud CoC verification and EU-US DPF certification; no EU-only storage guarantee or Dutch data-processor construction | Data in NL/EU, data processing agreement with a Dutch party, audits and access logging configurable to your own requirements Strongest option for this aspect |
| Scalability | Scales technically without effort (SaaS), but costs rise per user; above 1000 active users an Enterprise track is mandatory | Scales with the infrastructure (proven to hundreds of thousands of users) without extra licence costs; does require capacity planning |
Why organisations still choose Moodle with custom development
No licence costs per user: Moodle is open source (GPL) — from 50 to 50,000 users without the software licence growing; you pay for hosting and custom work, not per head
Full ownership and data sovereignty: hosting in a Dutch/EU datacenter of your choice, data processing agreement with a Dutch party — relevant for healthcare, government and education with strict data requirements
Unlimited code-level customization: own plugins, adapted workflows, themes and reports; the ecosystem counts thousands of open-source plugins as a starting point
Tailored integrations: LDAP/SAML/OAuth2, HR systems, ERP, own web services — built for your process instead of limited to the connectors the vendor offers
No vendor lock-in: open source, open database, full export of content and data; switching hosting party or agency is possible without losing the platform
Broader standard support for education formats, including SCORM 1.2 AND 2004, LTI and Moodle backup formats (MBZ) for full course transfer
Honest caveats about Moodle with custom development
- Higher entry costs and longer lead time: a decent Moodle implementation with custom work starts around EUR 5k and takes weeks instead of an afternoon — TalentLMS literally works the same day
- You carry (via your partner) responsibility for hosting, updates and security patches; with TalentLMS that is included in the subscription
- Moodle has no out-of-the-box AI course builder or ready-made content library like TalentCraft/TalentLibrary, and the admin interface has a steeper learning curve than TalentLMS
Switching from TalentLMS to Moodle
Migrating from TalentLMS to Moodle is quite doable, with one important caveat. What can come along: users, course metadata, branches and groups can be bulk-exported to Excel/CSV (Help Center 'How to import/export data') and imported into Moodle via CSV or the REST API; progress and certificate data can be archived as report exports (Excel/CSV) or restored into Moodle via custom work.
SCORM, xAPI and cmi5 packages you once uploaded yourself run one-to-one in Moodle (keep the original zip files — TalentLMS offers no easy re-download, see the Articulate community question about this).
The caveat: courses built in the TalentLMS editor or with TalentCraft have no documented export as a SCORM package and must be rebuilt in Moodle (or transferred via a content-migration track). So for a switch, plan on: (1) an inventory of which content is native vs. SCORM, (2) CSV/API migration of users and enrolments, (3) rebuilding native content, (4) running in parallel during the transition.
